When it comes to staying dry, not all fabrics offer the same level of protection. All our down and puffer jackets are treated with a water-repellent treatment, BIONIC-FINISH®ECO, as well as most of our light textile jackets and coats.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the three most common terms used to describe how well a garment can handle rain and snow:
Water-repellent
The fabric has a special surface treatment that makes water bead up and roll off, instead of soaking in right away. It offers basic protection against light rain and snow for a short time.
→ Example: BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is a water-repellent treatment.
Water-resistant
This provides better protection than water-repellent. It can handle light to moderate rain and snow for a while, but it’s not fully waterproof. Water may eventually seep through during heavy or prolonged exposure.
→ Example: Our water-resistant garments are made with laminated fabrics and treated with BIONIC-FINISH®ECO, giving them reliable protection against light to moderate rain and snowfall.
The lamination adds an extra barrier that helps prevent water from soaking through, while the treatment helps water roll off the surface.
Waterproof
This is the highest level of protection. Waterproof garments are designed to keep water and snow out even during heavy, continuous rain or snowfall.
→ Example: When a garment has a fabric with a water column rating of at least 5,000 mm and taped seams, it offers a high level of water protection.
